Jewellery Care

How do I look after my jewelry best?

Anything we make with a stainless steel base can get wet without any danger of tarnishing. Water may make the gold fade a little faster, though, so to keep your pieces looking good for as long as you can, we suggest taking them off in the shower. Items without a stainless steel base can tarnish as time goes on, but our gold plating holds up for more than a year. Neck on the line takes no responsibility for looking after your jewelry.

What is the right way to clean it?

Mix warm water with a soap free of detergent, then work gently with a soft-bristled brush.

Could I be allergic to jewelry?

Certain platings cause allergic reactions in some wearers. Nickel plating is the commonest culprit, and perhaps as many as 10% of people react to nickel. Sadly, nickel is used as an alloy to tint gold and is sometimes found in electroplating itself. Where allergies are a worry, many jewelry makers favour pieces in surgical steel, vermeil, gold-filled metal or sterling silver. Plain electroplated pieces generally carry a coating that is too thin.

My jewelry has changed color. What now?

A piece that changes straight away may be reacting to the natural oils in your skin. Oils differ from person to person, so metals respond in different ways. We cannot accept responsibility for how your skin reacts to metal, or the other way round. A gentle jewelry cleaner is fine for 14K Gold and Gold Filled jewelry. Stainless Steel and Gold Plated jewelry will change colour gradually with wear, and sadly it cannot be reversed. What we love about our stainless steel jewelry is its heavy Gold Plated finish, which ages into a pretty ombre blend of Gold and Silver.

My jewelry leaves green marks on my skin. What now?

Skin varies from one person to the next. Bronze, nickel and gold plating provoke strong reactions in some people. If that sounds like you, steer clear of any jewelry that is not solid gold or sterling silver. For this reason we cannot give refunds or accept returns, and we are sorry in advance.

Which materials do you use?

Every product has its own mix of metals. For the details on materials, take a look at the page for the item itself.

What is Stainless Steel?

Stainless steel Jewelry - An alloy of steel containing at least 10.5% chromium by mass and no more than 1.2% carbon by mass. This family of steels is best known for resisting corrosion, in other words they do not rust.

What is Gold Filled?

Gold-filled Jewelry - Sometimes known as rolled-gold. Despite the name, these pieces contain no actual gold fill. A base metal, typically brass or copper, is wrapped in sheets of gold through a mechanical bonding process. The result is in effect a heavy layer of gold, making up 5% (or 1/20) of the overall weight. Choose gold-filled for your very best jewelry. It is usually made from 14k gold and wears well. Treated reasonably, it will not peel or flake, and can last as long as jewelry made of solid 14k gold. Most people with sensitive skin can wear it safely.

What is Gold Plated?

Gold-plated Jewelry - Steel, brass or a similar base metal is lowered into an electroplating bath alongside a piece of solid gold. Passing an electric current through it leaves a fine film of gold on the metal. Because that coating is so thin, the plating, and with it the colour, can rub away on findings.

What is Sterling Silver?

Sterling Silver Jewelry - Pure silver blended with another metal, normally copper, makes sterling silver. That blend gives the silver its strength. To qualify, it must contain 92.5% silver or more, which is why some sterling silver pieces carry a .925 stamp.

Why do you use Stainless Steel?

Stainless steel is our favourite because it is kind to those who make and wear it, and it resists corrosion.

What makes your products eco-friendly?

Stainless Steel is our choice since it causes no harm to makers or wearers and stands up to corrosion. It has been tested and is regarded as eco-friendly by American standards.

My order arrived damaged. What now?

Should an item reach you broken, get in touch with us straight away and we will arrange a replacement. A return shipping label will be sent to you, and a new piece will be dispatched as soon as possible.

How often do you restock products?

Production usually happens in small batches. When something sells out and we are restocking, it is normally available again about a month later.
